A man shot to death in Stockton Tuesday night became the third person this year to be killed in a roughly mile-square area north of the Calaveras River that has proven a hotspot for homicides.
At 9:01 p.m. on Tuesday, a resident reported a shooting near 4400 Calandria St., just north of the Calaveras and west of Weberstown Park, according to a Stockton police statement.
A 46-year-old man had been shot, and died before he could be hospitalized, police spokesman Officer Andres Morado said. A San Joaquin County Medical Examiner spokesperson was unavailable Wednesday to identify the victim.
The area of Stockton where the victim was found — bordered roughly by March Lane and the Calaveras River to the north and south, and El Dorado Street and West Lane on either side — has already seen two fatal shootings this year, as well as multiple killings since 2020.
In February, first responders found a man suffering gunshot wounds on Gateway Court near the intersection of March and El Dorado. He later died at the hospital, police stated.
And in January, a man died of gunshot wounds on Greensboro Way, according to police.
The police department plans to increase patrols in the area and conduct a neighborhood walk to speak with residents, Morado said.
In 2022, at least two other homicides were reported on Greensboro: a 36-year-old man died following a triple shooting there in August, and a 20-year-old man was shot to death in February.
In the days following the February 2022 shooting, Greensboro Way resident Tom Cruz told The Record, “(I) mostly just stay inside [and] lock the gate.”
Cruz said he could recall “a couple” homicides on Greensboro since moving there about a year before the shooting.
In 2020, someone was killed in roughly the same place as Tuesday’s victim: 60-year-old Dennis Ferguson was stabbed to death near 4400 Calandria St.
In addition to the 46-year-old victim, a 38-year-old man was also shot Tuesday night and took himself to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the police statement.
Morado didn’t know the 38-year-old’s status as of Wednesday, he said.
The police department released no information about potential suspects in Tuesday’s shootings.
