The top prospect earned his spot in the Bronx.
Anthony Volpe has made the Yankees’ Opening Day roster, the team announced.
“My heart was beating pretty hard… Just feels amazing,” Volpe told reporters with a smile on his face after hearing that he’ll make the Opening Day roster.
The 21-year-old flashed his defense at shortstop and had success hitting against opponents. Volpe slashed .314/.417./.647 with three home runs and five RBI. The New Jersey native also drew eight walks and stole five bases.
The Yankees selected Volpe in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He joined the team this spring as a non-roster invitee and earned his spot to begin his season in the Bronx.
“[Anthony Volpe] really checked every box that we could have had for him, and absolutely kicked the door in and earned this opportunity,” manager Aaron Boone said.
