Gunfire erupted inside a Philadelphia bus Wednesday morning, reportedly leaving at least two passengers injured.
One victim was shot in the leg and another passenger’s leg was grazed, according to CBS News. It’s unclear what sparked the violence. No arrests were immediately made. An investigation is ongoing.
The shootings aboard the SEPTA bus reportedly occurred in northern Philly at North 21st and West Diamond streets. The violence comes days after a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot on a western Philadelphia SEPTA platform. ABC News sources said that killing occurred Saturday at 2 p.m. following an altercation involving a suspect who remains at large. SEPTA called that shooting “horrific” in a statement to ABC News defending the mass-transit system’s efforts to make buses and trains safe.
SEPTA serves over 600,000 riders a day, and the vast majority get to-and-from their destinations without incident,” SEPTA officials said. “However, even one violent crime is too many, and we are continuing to adjust police patrols and add officers to our ranks so we can address hot spots while providing police coverage across the system.”
CBS News reported last month that SEPTA passengers were rattled following a trio of shootings over a period of a couple weeks. Several Philadelphians said they were “hyper-aware” and felt unsafe using public transportation in the City of Brotherly Love.
SEPTA general manager Leslie Richards said, “There are issues here that are much bigger than SEPTA” contributing to the uptick in violence.
