A man has died after being shot in downtown Gainesville early Saturday morning, according to the Gainesville Police Department.
The shooting occurred around the 100 block of South Main Street around 1:07 a.m.
Officers, who were patrolling the area on foot, began receiving calls of gunshots and hearing them and discovered the crime scene in a grassy area on the west side of the Alachua County Tax Collector’s Office.
Officers rendered aid until EMS arrived, the department posted on its Facebook. The victim was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital and pronounced deceased. His name and age have not yet been released.
The department says that a preliminary investigation revealed that at some point a physical confrontation between the victim and others occurred that ended in gunfire. The suspect fled and has not been located, as of noon Saturday.
Investigators have additional collected evidence and are conducting a further investigation. Additional information will be made later, the department wrote.
