The 77-year-old pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle Thursday has died from his injuries and the driver has since been arrested, police said Friday.
According to police, the incident took place at roughly 2:20 p.m. on the 1400 block of South Layton Boulevard.
The man was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
Early Friday afternoon, police said the man died from his injuries. He has not been publicly identified.
Police said Thursday the driver, a 36-year-old Milwaukee man, stayed on scene and was cooperating with the investigation. On Friday, police said he was arrested and criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.
The crash came one day after a 71-year-old Greenfield man died from being struck by a vehicle on South 27th Street on the city’s south side.
In a statement Friday, Alds. Scott Spiker and JoCasta Zamarripa, who represent the areas where the crashes occurred, said they “are saddened and frustrated by these tragic incidents, and we offer our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
“As Council members, we strive for streets that are safe for everyone – pedestrians, drivers, bicyclists and those using other legal means of transportation,” the statement continued. “It is our intention to continue looking for improvements that can help ensure safety for all commuters across Milwaukee.
“We urge everyone driving to slow down, and to drive in a defensive manner at all times.”
Police reported 15 traffic deaths in Milwaukee so far this year through Thursday.
