A Green man was arrested after the Summit County Sheriff’s Office found homemade explosive devices in a residence in an apartment complex, which was evacuated Saturday, the agency said.
The sheriff’s office initially responded to a residence on Massillon Road in Green after a woman told police that a 48-year-old man of Green came into her home in violation of a protection order.
Deputies searched the residence and didn’t find him but did find several suspected explosive devices inside the residence, leading to the apartment complex being evacuated.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad and the ATF responded to the scene and found numerous homemade explosive devices, components used to manufacture explosive devices, weapons and ammunition.
The man was arrested and charged with illegal manufacturing or processing explosives, a second-degree felony, and violation of a protection order, a first-degree misdemeanor. The sheriff’s office said that additional charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
According to Barberton Municipal Court records, the explosives were “homemade pipe bomb devices with attached shrapnel.”
According to court records, the temporary protection order was filed with the court Friday, one day before the woman said he came to her residence in violation of the order.
He had been charged with domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor, in relation to an incident on Thursday in which he “did knowingly cause, or attempt to cause physical harm to the victim, a family or household member,” the court docket states.
On Wednesday, Barberton Municipal Judge Todd McKenney set a $1.5 million cash bond for the man, according to court records.
