One person was killed and three others injured, including an Alabama state trooper, after an Easter Sunday chase and an exchange of gunfire in Escambia County, law enforcement officials say.
At about 6:30 p.m. a trooper with Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division tried to pull over a vehicle for a traffic violation on Interstate 65 near the 101 mile marker in Conecuh County, a news release from ALEA said. The driver drove off and the trooper pursued the escaping vehicle, the release said.
The pursuit continued into Escambia County where the vehicle eventually left the roadway and gunfire was exchanged, according to the release.
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident as an officer-involved shooting, and their findings will be turned over to the Escambia County District Attorney’s office, the ALEA statement said. The agency said it is not releasing any more information at this time, citing the ongoing investigation.
