A Barren County deputy jailer has been accused of stealing over $1,000 from an inmate, according to Kentucky State Police.
Dustin Young, 25, of Edmonton, has been charged with theft by unlawful taking over $1,000. KSP said Young stole money from a current inmate lodged in the Barren County jail.
Court documents say Young booked an inmate into a holding cell early Tuesday. Video surveillance showed Young taking the inmate’s wallet and removing money from it.
Young later admitted to stealing $1,500 from the inmate’s wallet, according to court documents. He told investigators he intended to pay bills and buy a firearm with the money.
Young is being held at the Warren County jail, according to state police.
Barren County Jailer Aaron Shirley said Young was read a letter of termination after the preliminary investigation was completed. Young had been employed at the jail for almost a year and was hired before Shirley came into office.
State police said the investigation is being led by trooper Jonathan McChesney.
