One person is dead and another four wounded — including a young child — after gunfire erupted at a gas station in Kansas City, Mo., police said.
Officers with the Kansas City Police Department on Friday responded to a gas station parking lot, near E. 35th Street and Prospect Avenue, to investigate reports of a shooting, according to the Kansas City Star. When they arrived on the scene around 9:30 p.m., they discovered three people suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The first victim, a man who has not been identified, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries a short time later.
Another two shooting victims — a woman and a child under the age of 5 — arrived at the hospital a short time later. Police said their wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.
Officers also discovered two other women who were wounded, one of whom was treated on the scene and another who was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests have been made. Authorities have not released any details about a potential suspect, nor has a motive for the violence been made clear.
Police said a reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
“Any time where the normal to and from of our daily activities is interrupted by violence, it’s not something that we want to deal with as a community,” Media Relations Unit Commander Capt. Corey Carlisle told the Kansas City Star. “We want to give peace to the families and we want to bring justice to the individuals that are involved.”
The Kansas City shooting is the 156th mass shooting in the U.S. so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The nonprofit defines mass shootings as “4 or more shot or killed, not including the shooter.”
It marked the first in the Kansas City area in 2023.
