Nearly 100 letters containing an unidentified white powder were sent to Republican officials in Kansas, according to officials.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and its federal counterpart are leading the investigation, the KBI said Sunday night in a release.
Currently no injuries have been reported and preliminary testing of samples taken from the collected letters indicate “the substance is presumptively negative for common biological agents of concern.”
“Further and more complete testing will be conducted on this sample, as well as on additional letters that have been collected, in an effort to determine the components of the substance,” the bureau said.
Similar letters were addressed to former president Donald Trump and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas but they were intercepted by postal investigators before they were delivered, according to ABC News. Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, who is also a Republican, reportedly received one of the letters.
Republican state Rep. Stephen Owens shared a copy of the letter with CNN and it reads, in part, “To honor our recent accomplishments, I send you a gift … it is important not to choke on your ambition.”
Owens said he opened the envelope because the return address was for a church in his district. All of the letters had a return address in either Kansas City or Topeka, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.
Law enforcement has not given any motive for the letters.
In both March and April, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office found letters containing suspicious white powder in the run up and aftermath of Trump’s indictment over hush money payments to Stormy Daniels.
