A 53-year-old man died Wednesday night in a Vista jail cell, a sheriff’s official said.
Eddie Faulkner was alone in his cell when he was found unresponsive about 7 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Department, which manages the county’s jails. Deputies and medical staff responded immediately and performed life-saving measures, including CPR, but Faulkner died before he could be taken to a hospital.
“We extend our sympathies to the Faulkner family and those affected by this death,” the department said in a statement.
Faulkner was first booked into jail Nov. 7 on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender and of violating the terms of his probation, officials said. He is the third person to die in a San Diego County jail this year.
A representative of the Citizen’s Law Enforcement Review Board, a community oversight board, was notified of the death and responded to the jail, sheriff’s officials said. The sheriff’s homicide unit will investigate the death, as it does for all in-custody deaths.
