Rapper Quavo sang his song “Without You” at the 2023 Grammys on Sunday night in a touching tribute to his fallen Migos group member Takeoff. But minutes beforehand, Quavo reportedly got into a backstage brawl with Offset, the other surviving Migos rapper.
According to TMZ, Grammys organizers wanted Offset to participate in the “In Memoriam” tribute to Takeoff, who was fatally shot in November 2022. But Quavo blocked Offset from the tribute, leading to a physical fight between the two surviving Migos rappers, the outlet reports. Sources close to Offset said Quavo instigated the scuffle.
Takeoff was Quavo’s nephew and the pair were particularly close. Both were estranged from Offset, Quavo’s cousin, at the time of Takeoff’s death, TMZ says.
Fans were quick to notice Offset’s absence during the Takeoff tribute, particularly because the 31-year-old walked the Grammys red carpet on Sunday alongside his wife, Cardi B.
“Is Quavo’s beef w/ Offset that deep to where they couldn’t have done this together?!” one person tweeted on Sunday night. “He’s literally right there.”
On Monday, another fan tweeted, “Offset deserved to be part of the tribute just as much as Quavo. So I don’t understand where Quavo’s entitlement to being the sole performer of Take’s tribute is coming from.”
Takeoff was killed at a Houston bowling alley on November 1, 2022, when an argument led to a shooting outside the building, according to police. Sgt. Michael Burrow of the Houston Police Department’s homicide division later said that Takeoff, 28, was an “innocent bystander,” CNN reported.
Two weeks after Takeoff’s death, Offset eulogized his late cousin in an Instagram post. “The pain you have left me with is unbearable,” he wrote. “My heart is shattered and I have so many things to say, but I can’t find the words. I’ve been going to sleep and waking up hoping that all of this is a dream, but it’s reality, and reality feels like a nightmare. Every time you would see me, you didnt give me a dap you gave me a hug. I wish I could hug you one last time. Laugh one last time. Smoke one one last time. Perform one last time.”
