More than 48 hours after a shooting in the Short North, Columbus police have not yet confirmed how many people were hit or if any of those shot were hit by police gunfire.
Columbus police are currently holding a press conference to update what they know about the Saturday morning shooting in the Short North.
Chief Elaine Bryant said Saturday morning that officers had gone to the 600 block of North High Street around 2:30 a.m. Saturday after getting a report of a shooting. While the officers were on the scene, more gunshots were heard a short distance away and multiple officers fired back.
On Monday morning, police spokeswoman Melanie Amato said police could not yet confirm the number of people struck, saying it was a “big scene” and ongoing investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Police have not yet confirmed whether any of those injured were struck by police gunfire; however, BCI, which investigates all shootings by Columbus police in which a person is injured or killed, was leading the investigation.
The shooting area was concentrated in the area of North High Street and First Avenue but the scene spanned multiple blocks and closed down much of the Short North on Saturday.
Police have not released how many officers fired or their identities.
Police said one person was in critical condition on Saturday. No officers were hurt and a firearm was found at the scene, Bryant said.
Body camera footage from the incident has not yet been released but could become public as early as Monday afternoon.
