On April 10, two Nogales police officers shot and killed a 31-year-old man who police said was wielding two knives and wearing what appeared to be a bulletproof vest.
At 7:49 p.m., officers encountered the Nogales man, later identified as Edrei Toledo Ochoa, near the Circle K gas station on Mariposa Road in Nogales, Arizona.
The man was carrying a gun and putting on the vest, according to a written Nogales Police Department statement.
Ochoa became “combative” and “brandished a knife on each hand” after officers contacted him, police say. Ochoa threatened and approached the officers after they had given him numerous commands to drop the knives, according to the news release.
Two officers fired their handguns at Ochoa after using less-than-lethal methods, including tasers, police say. Ochoa was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two officers have been with the police department for 2 1/2 and 8 1/2 years, police said. Both have been put on paid administrative leave, pending further investigation by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
