Adam Brace, who directed the upcoming Broadway show “Just for Us,” died after a short illness, his London theater announced.
The British-born Brace, who was 43, died Saturday, less than two months before the scheduled opening of “Just for Us” in what was to be his Broadway debut.
“Adam was a director, co-creator, dramaturg, script editor and writer. He was a unique talent of our time, working with artists all over the world across theatre, comedy and performance,” London’s Soho Theatre, where Brace was an artistic director, said Tuesday.
“With enormous range and variety, his work won many accolades and awards, though he was fiercely proud of all of his shows and the artists he worked with. He loved working with them, and everyone loved working with him.”
“Just for Us,” a solo show starring comedian Alex Edelman, is set to open June 26 at Manhattan’s Hudson Theatre following a lengthy Off-Broadway run, as well as productions in London, Edinburgh, Melbourne, Boston, and Washington D.C.
The show also marks Edelman’s Broadway debut and is scheduled to run through Aug. 19.
“He was my closest collaborator for more than a decade, but more importantly, he was one of my closest friends,” Edelman tweeted Tuesday. “I don’t feel ready to acknowledge the magnitude of this loss, but I already feel it.”
Brace also directed Edelman’s previous two solo shows, including “Millennial,” which was named best newcomer at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards in 2014.
“I was lucky to spend so much time with him, especially over the last year and a half, and I am distraught at the prospect of doing the show without him on Broadway,” Edelman tweeted. “If I’m being honest, I’m not sure what kind of performer — and person — I’m going be without him.”
