Pop superstar Rihanna returned to the stage in grand fashion on Sunday night, performing live for the first time in more than five years at the Super Bowl LVII halftime show and becoming the first pregnant person to headline the event.
From a floating stage hovering high above State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ, Rihanna belted out hits like “Only Girl (In the World),” “Umbrella,” and “Diamonds”—and even surprised viewers with a baby bump.
On Twitter, however, the halftime show has gotten mixed reviews—much to one user’s surprise. “Wow, y’all really didn’t like Rihanna’s performance?” that fan tweeted. “I [thought] it was great and also was gagged by the pregnancy reveal and stages.”
Another fan was equally impressed, tweeting, “Vocally and choreography wise, this is Rihanna’s best live performance EVER!”
One fan, meanwhile, wanted more. “13 minutes for Rihanna’s Super Bowl performance isn’t good enough when she has so many bangers,” that person tweeted.
And Rihanna had plenty of famous fans on Sunday night, as a Fox Sports tweet round-up showed. Naomi Osaka said the halftime show “really didn’t disappoint,” LeBron James posted several fire emoji on the topic, and Halle Berry tweeted, “One word. Rihanna.”
Not everyone was so moved. “I’m just gonna say it, Rihanna’s performance was boring!” one user tweeted. “That’s mother and I love her deep tho!”
Other Twitter users agreed. “It really was,” a commenter tweeted. “It was just all one note. It was the same thing from start to finish.”
Another wrote: “It was cute but lackluster. It wasn’t giving me anything close to the hype it generated.”
A third commenter on that thread was underwhelmed, too. “Don’t care if Rihanna just stood there as she’s a queen and a superstar!” that person wrote. “I expected a bit more tho w/ the presentation. She looked radiant and loved the moving stage/dancers but kinda lacked that xtra edge we expect from Super Bowl Halftime shows.”
Twitter users could agree on one aspect of the halftime show, at least: the ASL interpretation. “I really wish this ASL interpreter got some national airtime during Rihanna’s Halftime performance,” one person tweeted, sharing a clip of Fox’s ASL simulcast. “SHE IS GETTING HER LIFE, LITERALLY ATE AND LEFT ZERO CRUMBS! What is her NAME?!” (For the record, that’d be ASL interpreter Justina Miles.)
