Athens-Clarke police seized a homeless man’s dog after finding the animal leashed inside a hot car.
The incident took place shortly before 4 p.m. Friday off Hawthorne Avenue when an officer on patrol spotted the 60-year-old man panhandling on the street and noticed that his car was parked nearby with the windows down.
The officer reported he stopped near the car and saw the dog inside tied to the gear shift. The windows were down, but the temperature that day reached 85 degree and still hotter inside the car even with the windows down, according to the report.
The dog was panting hard and the officer called for animal control to take possession of the dog.
An animal control officer took the dog and the owner was notified as to how he could seek to reclaim the dog.
