A Florida man was seriously injured Monday morning after he grabbed the steering wheel of a vehicle his wife was driving, caused a crash and was struck after running in front of a semi-truck.
The incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. on the Florida Turnpike in West Palm Beach when a 56-year-old man sitting in the front passenger seat of a 2016 Red Nissan Murano “grabbed the steering wheel and jerked it to the right,” causing the car to crash and flip, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
“After the vehicle came to final rest, the same occupant that grabbed the steering wheel exited the crash vehicle and ran into southbound traffic in front of approaching traffic” when he was hit by a semi-truck.
However, he survived and was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach with life-threatening injuries.
Florida Highway Patrol said the man was trying to kill himself.
The man’s wife and daughters, ages 23 and 15, who were in the back of the vehicle, suffered minor injuries. The truck driver was not injured.
