Both young men who escaped a Philadelphia prison 10 days ago have now been captured, authorities said Wednesday.
Ameen Hurst, 18, was caught around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in west Philadelphia, U.S. Marshal Robert Clark said.
Hurst and Nasir Grant, 24, busted out of Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center on the night of May 7 by cutting a hole in a fence, according to prison officials. They got an 18-hour head start before guards realized they were gone.
Grant didn’t make much of it. He was captured May 11 in North Philadelphia. But Hurst managed to elude authorities for several more days.
Hurst’s family contacted police on Tuesday night and said they were going to turn him in, according to the U.S. Marshals. The agents set a midnight deadline, but Hurst did not surrender.
“There were three deadlines that came and went,” Clark said at a press conference in Philadelphia. “And when the sun came up, that was it. We had to press forward with our investigation.”
Hurst was seen getting into a car with two of his relatives, and cops responded by moving in and detaining him. Hurst’s brother was also arrested, local ABC affiliate WPVI reported.
Hurst is charged with four murders dating back to 2020. Grant had been held on drug and gun conspiracy charges.
Three men were also accused of helping Hurst and Grant escape. Michael Abrams, 21, was arrested Monday and charged with criminal conspiracy, hindering apprehension, escape and criminal use of a communication facility.
Xianni Stalling, 21, was arrested last week on similar charges. Cops say Stalling put Hurst in touch with a getaway driver to spirit him and Grant away from jail after their escape.
Jose Flores-Huerta, 35, was also accused of helping Hurst and Grant escape. Flores-Huerta was already behind bars at the Philadelphia prison in connection with a 2021 incident in which a Queens man was killed outside of Pat’s cheesesteak shop.
