Ted Kaczynski, a Harvard-educated terrorist known as the Unabomber, has died in prison. He was 81.
Kaczynski was moved in December 2021 to a medical facility in North Carolina due to poor health after years of imprisonment at a maximum security facility in Colorado. He was discovered unresponsive in his cell early Saturday morning and pronounced dead a short time later around 8 a.m., a spokesperson for the federal Bureau of Prisons said.
His cause of death was not provided.
Kaczynski was sentenced in May 1998 to four consecutive life sentences plus 30 years for a bombing campaign that claimed the lives of three people and injured 23 others. Considered one of the most prolific bombers in the world at the time, he earned his nickname, the “Unabomber,” because his early targets often included universities and airlines.
He eventually confessed to carrying out 16 bombings between 1978 and 1995, most of them involving homemade explosives. They were always tested and came in meticulously handcrafted wooden boxes sanded to remove possible fingerprints. Later bombs bore the signature “FC” for “Freedom Club.”
