A 2-year-old boy watched as his father was shot to death on a Bronx street by a gunman who intervened in a fight between the baby’s parents, heartbroken relatives said.
Marquis Lane, 31, got into an argument with his former girlfriend, who is the mother of his son, near Park Ave. and E. 167th St. in Morrisania about 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, police sources said.
A man who knows the mother intervened and shot Lane in the chest, according to cops.
“The 2-year-old boy was there when it happened,” said Lane’s grandmother Helen Hannibal. “It wasn’t right. It should have never happened.”
Lane was rushed to Lincoln Hospital but could not be saved.
He was just a few blocks from the home he shared with his grandmother when he was shot.
“He was my grandson and I’m trying to accept what happened,” said Hannibal, 75. “I loved him and I will love him always.”
Lane worked in construction and was a father of four.
“We’re all in shock,” said Lane’s cousin Dionne Elliot. “We don’t know what the argument was about.”
Neither Hannibal nor Lane’s cousin know the mother of his baby, who disappeared after the shooting.
Police are still looking for the shooter. And Lane’s former girlfriend is considered a “person of interest” in the murder and is wanted for questioning, police said.
“I just haven’t accepted this yet,” said Hannibal, as she fought back tears.
