McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko announced on Facebook Monday “It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that the City of McKeesport has lost a police officer in the line of duty.”
The mayor’s office said officers were responding to a domestic dispute when gunfire erupted.
Police earlier tweeted that two law enforcement officials and an undefined suspect were shot in suburban Pittsburgh Monday afternoon. The officers’ status was not immediately known.
Information about the suspect, described by Channel 11 News in Pittsburgh as “an unstable man,” has not been made available.
Schools were locked down while investigators canvassed the area. A community hospital was also secured, though its emergency room remained open. Police ask citizens to avoid the 1300 block of Grandview Avenue area. Police have not responded to a request for further information.
The shooting, which occurred around 12:30 p.m., was in Allegheny County, where a police chief was killed and an officer was injured in a shooting early last month.
