At least three people were killed in a shooting in northwest New Mexico on Monday morning, police said.
Two cops who responded to the scene were wounded and the attacker was killed, according to authorities in Farmington.
Both officers, one with the Farmington Police Department and another with New Mexico State Police, were transported to a local hospital in stable condition, police said.
“The suspect’s identity is unknown and there are no other known threats at this time,” the Farmington Police Department said in a Facebook post.
Cops initially responded to Brookside Park in Farmington, a city of about 45,000 about 50 miles southeast of New Mexico’s four corners state border with Colorado, Utah and Arizona.
“I am deeply upset by the tragic violence that unfolded today in Farmington,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham wrote on Twitter. “I‘m also grateful for the quick response by law enforcement. My administration will not stop fighting the epidemic of gun violence from every angle possible.”
Mass shootings across the U.S. have occurred at an unprecedented pace in 2023, according to public databases.
Since May 1, eight people were fatally shot at a mall in Texas; one person was killed and four wounded in a shooting at an Atlanta hospital; three people were killed in a rampage in south Georgia; two people were fatally shot and five more wounded in a shooting at a neighborhood gathering in Yuma, Ariz., and two people were killed and four wounded in a shootout between motorcycle gangs in Augusta, Ga.
