A person died and Interstate 5 is closed following a police shooting in Salem Monday morning.
An Oregon State Police trooper was involved in the shooting at 8:42 a.m.
The shooting response and investigation closed I-5 northbound lanes near the Mission Street exit for several hours. The closure is expected to continue for several more hours, police said late Monday morning.
According to radio dispatch, police responded to reports of an “active shooter” just before 9 a.m. Medic responders and police reported that one person had been shot.
Police were ordered to “block off everything.”
Initial reports indicate no troopers or officers were injured in the shooting.
Oregon Department of Transportation officials said all northbound lanes were impacted. One southbound lane was closed. Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes.
At about 9:04 a.m., Eyre Elementary, Four Corners Elementary, Miller Elementary, Houck Middle School and Roberts Structured Learning Center were placed in lockdown for about 15 minutes due to the police activity.
Salem police said the highway was closed northbound from Exit 253 at Mission St./Highway 22 to Exit 256 at Market Street due to the police investigation.
Police said at 10:40 a.m. there was no current danger to the public.
The Marion County Major Crimes Team was activated after the shooting. Salem Police Department will be the lead investigating agency.
Officials did not release any information about the identity of the person killed or what led to the interaction with police.
