One person is dead and another person was injured by gunfire early Saturday morning after a fatal shooting in Lawrence. Police are still searching for a suspect.
At about 5:20 a.m. Saturday, dispatchers received a 911 call after gunshots rang out at an apartment complex in the 5800 block of Beatle Drive. As officers with the Lawrence Police Department arrived near the scene, they spotted a Dodge model car driving away at a high rate of speed.

“The suspect vehicle was going at least 100 mph,” said LPD Sgt. Matthew Miller, adding that due to safety concerns, police were unable to pursue the vehicle and initiate a traffic stop.
At the apartment complex, officers found a 17-year-old male whom medics pronounced deceased. Investigators soon learned gunfire had pierced the wall of a nearby apartment and injured another 17-year-old male.
“He received a graze wound to the head and was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in good condition,” Miller said.
Miller said the same vehicle that fled the scene of the shooting was later found abandoned after crashing at the intersection of E. Washington Street and German Church Road. Investigators determined the vehicle was stolen, Miller said.
“There’s no active threat to public safety at this time,” Miller said. “Detectives are still investigating.”
