The second inmate who escaped from a Virginia jail last month was captured Monday while seeking medical assistance on a college campus.
Bruce Callahan, 44, was “injured and in poor health” when he was walking near a residential community owned by Longwood University around 5:30 a.m. Monday morning, the school said.
The U.S. Marshals said Callahan was spotted by a female student who determined something was off about the situation.
“Early this morning, Mr. Callahan approached a college student on Longwood University campus and she obviously felt a little concerned, ran over, pulled the fire alarm, and Farmville police showed up and placed him in custody,” U.S. Marshal’s Eastern District Chief Larry Moltzan told WRAL.
Campus police and Farmville cops took Callahan into custody but did not reveal what his injuries were.
Moltzan said the escaped inmate had been living in nearby woods and surviving off river water.
Longwood is also in Farmville, about three miles from Piedmont Regional Jail where Callahan and Alder Marin-Sotelo escaped on April 30. Marin-Sotelo was apprehended in Mexico last week.
Marin-Sotelo and his older brother Arturo Marin-Sotelo were charged in the killing of a North Carolina sheriff’s deputy in 2022. Callahan was being held on federal drug and weapons charges.
Adriana Marin-Sotelo, their sister, was arrested last week by the FBI for arranging for her brother’s getaway car. Surveillance video shows Marin-Sotelo driving away from the jail’s parking lot in a red Ford Mustang.
Investigators are still searching for the missing sports car.
According to WFMY, Piedmont Regional Jail had been experiencing issues with its locking systems for several months ahead of the escapes, and installation of replacement locks had been delayed.
