The body of a 4-year-old boy was found on an island in Boston Harbor a day after he went missing.
Massachusetts State Police said Mohamed Abou Fofana was playing at a park with a relative on Castle Island on Sunday when he disappeared and the family member called 911. Several agencies began searching the area.
The search for the boy continued Monday until his body was found about a mile away on Spectacle Island.
“With much sadness we report that we located Mohamed’s body at 12:29 PM today on the shoreline of Castle Island,” the state police said in a statement, adding that detectives would continue their investigation.
“We express our deepest condolences to his family.”
Police said the body would be transferred to the chief medical examiner’s office.
According to WCVB, Mohamed and his sister went to the park with their grandfather Soleymane Fofana around 7 p.m. Sunday.
He said he was on the phone when he lost track of the boy, who family members said is autistic and non-verbal.
Mantenjay Fofana, the child’s mother, told NBC Boston he was energetic and had a tendency to wander away.
Police obtained surveillance video of the boy running and found one of his Crocs in the water.
“We did review some … video footage, you see Mohamed leaving the playground in that footage, not accompanied by his adult relative at that point, and then he goes off screen and you don’t see him again in the footage,” state police spokesman David Procopio told WCVB.
