Former pro wrestler Lanny Poffo has died at 68 years old.
Poffo, who wrestled as a number of different characters, notably as “Leaping” Lanny Poffo and the mortarboard-and-gown-wearing “The Genius” in the WWF in the 1980s, was the brother of late wrestler “Macho Man” Randy Savage — who died in 2011.
News of Poffo’s death was first reported Thursday afternoon by fellow wrestler Hacksaw Jim Duggan.
“With a very, very heavy heart, I’ve been asked to let everyone know about the passing of our friend and colleague Lanny Poffo, The Genius. RIP Lanny,” Duggan wrote on social media.
In 2015, Poffo inducted Macho Man into the WWE Hall of Fame with a poem.
The WWE also released a statement on Thursday.
“WWE is saddened to learn that Lanny Poffo, best known to sports-entertainment fans as The Genius, passed away at 68 years of age. WWE extends its condolences to Poffo’s family, friends and fans,” it said.
