A man and a woman face murder charges in connection with the death of their infant son, according to Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.
Kennedy identified the parents as 23-year-old Jameela Biggs and 36-year-old Antonio Martin.
At around 7 p.m. Monday, DCH Regional Medical Center admitted an unresponsive male infant. The infant was subsequently transferred to Children’s of Alabama hospital in Birmingham, where physicians determined that the child had extensive injuries, including multiple skull fractures, Kennedy said.
Kennedy said Biggs and Martin submitted to interviews but they did not provide an explanation for the child’s injuries, which occurred at a residence in the 4900 block of Second Street East. He said that both admitted that they were the only adults who had contact with the child during the time that the injuries occurred.
A medical expert examined the child extensively Tuesday and reported that the injuries were consistent with intentional physical abuse. Biggs and Martin were arrested and initially charged with aggravated child abuse.
The infant was placed on life support Tuesday, but died of his injuries Thursday. The charges against Biggs and Martin were then upgraded to murder.
Biggs and Martin are being held at the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
