Actress Blake Lively told reporters Thursday she will not be attending the 2023 Met Gala in New York City on Monday, May 1, despite being a staple at the red carpet event.
The question was posed to Lively, 35, as she walked a different red carpet for Tiffany & Co. Fifth Avenue’s grand re-opening in NYC, reports People. When reporters asked the former “Gossip Girl” star if they would see her at “fashion’s biggest night out,” she replied, “You will not … but I will be watching.”
After being complimented on her 2022 outfit, Lively responded, “Thank you, that’s very sweet. I’ll be wearing that on my couch on Monday.”
Lively sported a brown leather-like midi dress and matching strappy heels at Thursday’s Tiffany & Co. event. She accessorized the look with chunky Tiffany gold jewelry, including the Elsa Peretti® Snake Necklace that retails for $60,000. She kept her hair long and loose in voluminous curls.
Lively’s been a regular at past Met Galas, appearing at most of the events since 2008, often alongside her husband Ryan Reynolds, whom she married in 2012. In fact, the 2014 Met Gala marked the first time the couple attended a red carpet together as a duo.
Over the years, she’s attended the event in a variety of high-end designer labels including Versace, Chanel, and Gucci.
Last year’s look included a regal Versace gown with a coppery-pink train and matching opera-length gloves. In a nod to the Statue of Liberty, the design surprised the crowd when the train and gloves seemed to magically transform into a shade of greenish-blue.
This year’s Met Gala will center around the theme “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” It will celebrate the late German fashion designer who became famous for revitalizing Chanel beginning in the 1980s. He passed away in 2019.
