Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested that President Biden may be the source behind the leak of troves of highly sensitive intelligence documents that have surfaced online in recent days.
“The worst leaks of ‘Intelligence’ in US history. Our Country has never been so embarrassed, and yet they come after ‘Trump’ on their old and tired Boxes Hoax,” Trump, 76, wrote in a Truth Social post, referring to the federal investigation into his retention of documents from his presidency.
Both the Pentagon and the Department of Justice have launched investigations to figure out how secret documents containing US intelligence assessments of Ukraine’s military capabilities and vulnerabilities and information about allies and potential adversaries have made their way online.
The documents have been described by Pentagon officials as similar in format to those used to provide daily updates to senior leaders.
On Wednesday, Trump argued that the federal special counsel overseeing the investigation into his mishandling of classified information — Jack Smith — should be sicced onto Biden, 80, because of the leaks.
“The Special ‘Prosecutor’ should investigate Biden, maybe he was the leaker? Nothing would surprise me about this group!” Trump said.
His post comes a day after he hammered Biden and Pentagon leaders for the disastrous US withdrawal from Afghanistan during an interview with host Tucker Carlson.
“Afghanistan, one of the worst things I’ve ever seen,” Trump said. “I think the most embarrassing moment that this country has ever had, frankly.”
The ex-commander in chief told Carlson that US military officials, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, fought him on his insistence that the US not leave military equipment behind in Afghanistan.
“I said I want every nail, I want every screw. I want the tents — they said, ‘Sir the tents are very hard to take out.’ I said I want the tents. I want the tanks. I want the planes. I want everything. And a couple of them fought me on it, like Milley,” Trump claimed.
