A man shot by Gloucester County sheriff’s deputies on Saturday has died from his injuries.
Deputies responded to the 7000 block of Ark Road in the Sassafras community following a report of an armed man trying to break into a home at 5:25 p.m. The deputies encountered a man coming down the back steps of a home and gave him verbal commands, according to the sheriff’s office.
The man, identified by Virginia State Police on Monday as 52-year-old Willie Dion Giles, of Gloucester, allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired it at the deputies, prompting them to return fire. Giles was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he later died, according to VSP.
The shooting is under a state police investigation, which the sheriff’s office said “is protocol with all officer-involved shootings with our agency.”
“As is standard procedure, once the Virginia State Police concludes its investigation, the investigative findings are turned over to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for final review and adjudication,” state police spokesperson Sgt. Michelle Anaya said.
The deputies involved have been placed on leave pending the criminal investigation and state police investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
