An Everett police officer was shot and a suspect is dead after an incident with two scenes early Wednesday, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Courtney O’Keefe said.
O’Keefe said multiple officers and suspects were involved, but it is not yet known if an officer shot the suspect who was killed and if the suspect who was killed is the person who shot the officer.
She said Everett police were responding to a 911 call in the area of Evergreen Way between Casino and Holly roads when a shooting occurred.
The officer was shot at the gas station at the Fred Meyer store on Evergreen Way and Casino Road. Video from the gas station, which is closer to Holly Road, showed an Everett Police Department SUV with its driver’s side door open and what appeared to be bullet damage in the driver’s side window.
The officer who was shot was taken to the Colby Campus of Providence Hospital, where officers gathered. The injured officer’s condition is not known.
The second scene is across the street at the CarHop used car lot, where there was a body on the ground. The victim appeared to be a man. O’Keefe confirmed that the person who was dead was involved in the shooting incident.
Evergreen Way in Everett is closed from Casino Road to Holly Road, where both scenes are cordoned off with crime scene tape. It is not known when the road will reopen.
Mister Truth reporter Ranji Sinha spoke to a bystander in the area.
“It’s sad, very sad. My father wanted to be an officer. And it’s times like this that I’m kind of glad that he wasn’t. Because their job is hard enough as it is, and now they have to worry about possibly putting on bulletproof vests,” he said.
The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) is conducting the investigation. The team investigates when there is a police use of force incident such as an officer-involved shooting.
Mister Truth saw posts on Twitter from people who said they heard gunfire in the area around 3 a.m. and then saw police converge on the area.
Officers from Everett and Edmonds are at the scene along with deputies from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
