Nearly 60,000 Maxi-Cosi and Safety 1st infant car seats have been recalled over a detachment issue that could lead to serious injury.
In an announcement, Dorel Juvenile Group said the affected car seats did not conform to the requirements of a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that covers “Child Restraint Systems.”
All models of Safety 1st onBoard 35 SecureTech, Maxi-Cosi Coral XP, Maxi-Cosi Mico XP, Maxi-Cosi Mico XP Max, and Maxi-Cosi Mico Luxe+ rear-facing infant car seats and the the Maxi-Cosi Infant Car Seat Base are part of the recall.
More than 59,400 car seats, which were manufactured from May 1, 2020 to Feb. 28, 2023, are included.
According to the company, there’s a risk that the anchors on the lower part of the seat could fail and detach from the base.
“When the car seat is installed into the vehicle with the base secured using the lower anchors, the seat may detach,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explained. “A detached child seat may not properly restrain the occupant, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.”
Max-Cosi said the car seats are safe to use “with the base installed using the vehicle belt, or with carrier shell only installation using the vehicle belt” until a free replacement basement can be sent to customers.
No injuries have been reported because of the issue, which was discovered during third-party testing.
Affected customers who registered their car seats should receive a letter or email notification by April 7, 2023, the company said.
