Three construction workers were injured Tuesday when the rear wall rear wall of a building in SoHo collapsed around them, Fire Department officials said.
The crew was in the process of demolishing the building on Lafayette St. near Canal St. about 1 p.m. when the rear wall crumbled down on top of them, officials said.
At least two of the construction workers were trapped underneath the rubble, officials said.
Firefighters managed to pull them out, and EMS rushed them to Bellevue Hospital.
One of the three hardhats suffered serious injuries in the collapse, FDNY officials said. The other two suffered minor injuries.
The city Department of Buildings immediately imposed a partial stop work order barring any more demolition at the site, until the collapse’s cause can be investigated, according to city records.
Demolition was also halted February 7 after a DOB inspection showed that the site wasn’t being properly maintained, creating a number of safety hazards. The stop work order was lifted a week later after the concerns were addressed, according to city records.
