A 46-year-old city man who stabbed his brother will serve eight to 12 years in prison in connection with the Dec. 14 attack.
Stark County Common Pleas Judge Chryssa Hartnett sentenced Derek T. Edwards after a jury found him guilty of attempted murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. He was acquitted of a kidnapping charge.
Police responded to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital at 9:41 p.m. Dec. 14 when a man was dropped off with stab wounds and cuts on his body. Detectives found the vehicle that dropped off the 43-year-old victim in the 1700 block of Superior Avenue NE and identified the suspect.
Edwards will spend at least two years on parole after his release. He will be required to complete the court’s re-entry program if he lives in Stark County while he is on parole.
Hartnett sentenced Edwards to another year in prison on unrelated drug charges filed in February. He pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated drug possession, possession of a fentanyl-related compound and cocaine possession.
Edwards is required to pay court costs in both cases. He was given credit against his sentences for time already spent in the county jail.
Hartnett sentenced Edwards in the stabbing case June 29, a day after the jury reached its verdict. He pleaded guilty to the drug charges June 29. The sentencing order on the drug charges was filed July 10.
