Wayne police are investigating a fatal incident Tuesday afternoon that ended in the death of a middle school student.
According to police, a school bus struck the student, who attends Franklin Middle School, in front of the school at approximately 2:50 p.m. Students were on board the bus and authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor, police confirmed Tuesday night. The driver is not in police custody.
In a letter to families of the Wayne-Westland Community Schools district, superintendent John Dignan said, “I write this with a heavy heart. Today we lost one of our Franklin Middle School students in a fatal accident. There is no tragedy more awful than that of losing a child.”
Emotional support teams are expected at Franklin Middle School Wednesday to offer assistance for students or staff coping with this tragedy.
