An Endicott man originally charged with attempted murder and multiple other felonies following an investigation into an alleged arson for hire plot has been convicted of a lesser felony.
A jury found David Rexer, 51, guilty of fourth-degree conspiracy following a trial in Broome County Court.
Rexer was originally charged in June 2022 with second-degree attempted murder, second-degree conspiracy, second-degree attempted arson, and fourth-degree conspiracy, all felonies.
An investigation by the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force determined Rexer conspired with another person to commit arson at an occupied dwelling in the Village of Endicott. No motive for the crime was ever revealed.
On June 28, 2022, Rexer conspired with another person by making an agreement and providing a $400 down-payment for supplies to commit the crime of arson at a building located in Endicott, according to the Broome County District Attorney’s Office.
Rexer was unaware the person he was in contact with was an undercover police officer, the district attorney’s office said.
In August 2022, a Broome County grand jury declined to indict Rexer on the attempted murder charge, but did indict him on felony counts of second-degree attempted arson, second-degree conspiracy and fourth-degree conspiracy.
Rexer, who has a prior conviction for third-degree rape, is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 23. He faces up to one-and-one-third to four years in state prison for his conviction.
Rexer has been in custody at the Broome County jail since his arrest.
