Chloe Bailey, one half of R&B sibling duo Chloe & Halle, has been tapped to headline a Tina Turner tribute during tonight’s “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom” concert.
The star-studded event, broadcasting live at 8 p.m. ET, will take place at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre. Vice President Kamala Harris is also expected to speak during the program.
Bailey is among the R&B, gospel and hip hop starshonoring the United States federal holiday, which was signed into law in 2021 to commemorate the 1865 emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
Other performers include Charlie Wilson, Nelly, Miguel, Kirk Franklin, SWV, Davido, Coi Leray and Jodeci,
“Performing on Juneteenth 💕 so excited!,” the “Have Mercy” songstress shared on social media over the weekend as news of her honoring the late “Queen of Rock & Roll” was announced.
Turner died at her home near Zurich, Switzerland on May 24. She was 83.
Bailey’s mentor Beyoncé previously performed a tribute to the “What’s Love Got to Do With It” singer during the 2005 Kennedy Center Honors. The “Bootylicious” singer, who called Turner “the epitome of power and passion” on her website, performed “Proud Mary” side-by-side with Turner at the 2008 Grammy Awards.
Produced by a team of Black creators from Live Nation Urban and Jesse Collins Entertainment, “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom” is in its second year and will also be simulcast on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
Oscar and Grammy winner Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots and Adam Blackstone will serve as music directors of the concert, which will be hosted by CNN anchor Sara Sidner.
